CEU Professional Internship Program in
Winter
During the Winter semester (Jan-Apr), seniors and graduate students
participate in a full-time internship (approx. 35 hours a week) for 12
weeks. Next to their internship engagement, students are
required to take one subject course from a Fall
curriculum offered in any CEU department or program. Students can also
take a Hungarian language course. Other language
classes such as Russian, French, German, Italian, Spanish or Arabic can
be arranged if requested and students pay the fees for these courses
directly to instructors. At the end of the internship program students
are asked to submit a final written report detailing the internship
accomplishments, lessons learned, and cultural experience.
CEU places interns at a variety of private, public and non-profit
organizations operating in areas such as:
- International Law & Refugees
- Human Rights & Minority Rights
- Public Health
- Education, Children & Youth
- European Integration
- Arts & Culture
- Environmental Policy
- Archival Research
- Media & Journalism
- International Politics & Security
- Countries in Transition
- Gender Issues
- Jewish History & Culture
- International Business & Consulting
Senior undergraduate students can earn up to 4 credits for a subject course, and 2 credits for a Hungarian language course that will be transferred into Bard College undergraduate transcript for easy transfer of credits to students' home institutions. Graduate students can earn up to 4 graduate credits awarded by CEU for a subject course and take a Hungarian language course on a pass/fail basis. Neither CEU nor Bard offers credits for internships.
The Winter Internship Program starts at the beginning January and ends at the beginning of April.
The deadline for submitting application documents for the Fall Internship
Program is October 15. Students are informed about the acceptance
to the program usually by the mid of May and receive documents needed to apply
for a Hungarian student visa in thier country of residence. Please note:
Students accepted to the program must apply for and secure the Hungarian student
visa in their countries of residence before coming to Budapest to start their
internships.
After receiving students' confirmation deposit credited towards the program fee,
CEU staff in the US and Budapest will begin working closely with each student to
ensure an appropriate internship match, taking into consideration the particular
interests and skill sets of the students and the substantive opportunities
available in the host organization in Budapest. CEU will conduct background
research on the internship organization and arrange phone interviews between the
student and the organization. CEU staff are available to provide relevant
assistance to the students throughout the placement period (May-Aug) and the
Fall program (Sep-Dec).
Please note: The internship program is highly competitive. Students are
not guaranteed an internship; assignments are developed in concert with CEU and
are based on a student’s experience, interest, and internship availability.
The participants are invited to stay at the CEU graduate dormitory during the time of their internship. Students are however free to search independently for and live in rented apartments in Budapest.
The Summer Institute will organize a variety of cultural activities for the students, including a walking tour of the city; trips to concerts and a ballet at the National Opera House; visits to museums and cultural festivals, and trips in and around Budapest.
Fee for the Summer Institute: $4,500
Mandatory health insurance: $200
The fee for the Fall Internship program covers the internship placement, orientation
program, a subject seminar with its credits, Hungarian language course,
internship monitoring and evaluation, and the cultural program. Each student is
responsible for her own travel costs, visa fee, housing (either at
the CEU dormitory or an apartment in the city)
and living expenses.
Currently, no scholarships for the Fall Internship Program are available.
Students are encouraged to check with their host college to see if any financial
aid will transfer to cover the fee for the summer internship program.
